Scott Duffy

Scott Duffy studied at the University of Chester, he worked his worked his way up from making gig posters to starting a business with his wife were they now great gift cards, mugs, t-shirts, games etc. While Duffy was studying he really enjoyed screen printing, after he graduated from University he never went straight into a creative job, he worked in restaurant a couple nights a week and basically just floated for a few years as he didn't really feel ready, his portfolio wasn't fully up to standard. So he decided to take a job as a web developer, which he didn't really enjoy until he became promoted to the designer for the company. He went to multiple 'Creative Process' nights in the bars and coffee shops etc, he then start 'Print Social' with a couple of friends who were like minded which gave them the opportunities to talk about their ideas and creative approaches. He now has the business with his wife and his friends have created different exhibition spaces, they are on the road to creating a print studio in Liverpool where anyone can go and create work, have a coffee, sort of a social space.

But what stood out most to me was when Duffy spoke about his creative process, he discussed something called "LINT" - Ideas are like floating particles which land on your jacket as you are moving along, you are picking up pieces and then you have to remove them from your jacket to get the final idea.

L- live, don't get bogged down, step away, go for a walk, clear your mind and get away from the screen. This helps the creative process and allows the brain to pick up new signals, it also allows you to spot mistakes or developments your work has.

I- interests, what are your hobbies and interests, what do you like doing, use them for inspiration.

N- notes, make lists and take notes, sometimes a sketchbook can be intimidating so making notes and using a list allows you to explore your ideas one by one in a simpler way.

T- think, this was is basically very simple, just think about what you're doing and don't over complicate.
